"Berserker Bomber" |
This model is based on the Battle for Helm's
deep in The
Two Towers where the Uruk Hai place explosives in the sewer grate and then
an Uruk Hai Berserker runs in with a torch. |
"Blood on your face, Waving your Banner all over the place" |
This model took its inspiration from three sources, the Battle for
Helm's deep,
a Queen song, and the picture of an Orc on TheOneRing.net. In The Two Towers
the Uruk Hai approaching Helm's
deep march under black
banners marked with the hand of Saruman, which inspired the detailing on the
banner. The Queen song, made me think that the banner bearer should look
like a veteran who has fought to retain his banner in a battle and as such
is suitably wounded, and the picture of the Orc showed their white, diseased
flesh. |
"Cross-eyed Orc" |
This was a fairly simple conversion where I added an arrow to the drawn bow and stuck some arrows into the ground at the figures base. Because this is an orange slider he can’t shoot in a turn that he moves, so it seemed appropriate for him to store his arrows within easy reach. To give the figure some character I repainted the eyes so that they are cross-eyed to the center and give the impression that he is staring intently at where the arrow tip and bow meet. |
"Lothlorien Ranger with Arrow released" |
I created a hunting team of rangers that I refer to as
the Hunters. Instead of being the golden-haired forest green wearing elves,
they are more the lords of the woods. They paint their faces with blue war
paint, hopefully evoking ideas of Braveheart with savage warriors fighting
against impossible odds. They wear
midnight blue cloaks because they do most of their stalking at night.
Despite their more ferocious nature, they have a love of finery and the
figures cloak is embroidered with a fine blue line along one edge, and he
has a lighter blue hood. |
"Lothlorien Ranger with pouch" |
This was a very simple conversion with only the addition of a simple belt pouch below the figures right arm. Its face is painted in the tradition of the Hunters and it wears the midnight blue cloak and has red-fletched arrows. His clothes are much more elaborate with a blue under-coat and a blue sash. His tunic is embroidered with gold thread and his surcoat is embroidered in dark green. |
"Orc Drummer" |
This is a companion figure to the banner bearer and is an Orc Warrior who has had his shield replaced by a set of three drums made from skulls, and his sword replaced with a huge drumstick (which would make an excellent club). His shield and sword are now worn on his back so that he can protect himself as required. His flesh has been repainted to show the colours of the Orcs from the movies and his tunic has been painted a sickly green to further accentuate his colouring. His hair has also been highlighted with an earthy brown, to show that he is muddy and unclean. The idea is that he is a veteran of the same skirmishes that the standard bearer participated in. |
"Orc readying arrow" |
This model was another simple conversion where the left arm was removed and repositioned at a downward angle. An arrow was added to his right hand and his eyes repainted so that he is looking towards his bow. |
"Orc reloading" |
This was a fairly extensive conversion requiring the removal of the head and the right arm. The Orc is now looking down towards his quiver while he moves his right arm to grab another arrow. |
"Real reason Orcs always miss" |
This was another fun conversion requiring the decapitation of the model and the amputation of its right arm. I repositioned the head so that he is looking upwards, and added a stone mug with “XXX” painted on it to his right hand with the arm repositioned so that it seems like he is about to either take a big swig, or say “cheers.” Whenever I am feeling particularly frustrated that my Orcs can’t hit my opponent, I replace one of my Archer’s with this drunkard and it adds a bit of levity to the game. |
"Uruk Hai chest wound" |
This model is inspired by one of the Uruk Hai from the Battle for Helm's deep scene that runs on top of a big rock and yells a battle cry. The armour has been highlighted, shaded and washed so that is seems like it has been through a battle, and the Hand of Saruman is painted on the breast plate. Two gashes have been carved in the chest, which are bleeding and there are also three gashes in his shield. The skin has been repainted in the Uruk Hai, red, brown with black mud style. The loincloth has been repainted to accentuate the depth of colour on the armour and on the warriors flesh. |
"Uruk Hai with arrow shield" |
This model has had its armour highlighted, shaded and washed so that it seems like it has been through a battle. The pattern on the shield is inspired by the Uruk who move up the rampart towards Helm's deep in The Two Towers movie, and as such has an arrow imbedded in it. The warrior's sword also has blood splatters on it. The loincloth has been repainted to accentuate the depth of colour on the armour and on the warriors flesh. |
"Haradrim Raiding Force" |
I envision the Haradrim Warriors (Purple) as the Fremen (from Dune) of Middle Earth. They are fantastically powerful warriors from a desert country and I have converted them so they are in more dynamic poses, and armed with more dramatic weaponry. I have relied on what little description I could find in The Lord of the Rings, as well as traditional desert colors, during their customization. The Purple Haradrim Warriors in the game are really powerful and as such require individualization. |
"Haradrim with Sword and Spear" |
I think that the Haradrim Warrior (Purple) is one of the best minions in the game. It has Battle Awareness for zero cost, and Fast Strike and Aggressive Strategy for 1 each. They are most useful when used with 2 to 4 in a battle, and as such are almost heroes. I think they are one of the worst sculpts, however, and decided to personalize them. This figure has had its torso repositioned so it is twisting to the left, has had both arms removed and repositioned, and its sword replaced with a more substantial blade and a spear added in its other hand. The model has been completely repainted in what I consider more appropriate desert colors, and the weapons are painted red because in The Return of the King, the Haradrim are described as having red blades. |
"Haradrim with Fighting Claws" |
This figure has had its arms repositioned and its hands replaced by ones armed with fighting claws. The original sculpt has the Haradrim Warriors leaning backwards and this was maintained to give the figure a “bring it on” attitude. It was repainted in what I consider better desert colors. |
"Haradrim with Serpent Blade and Sword" |
This was a simple conversion involving the repositioning of the figures right arm, and a simple weapon swap. The Serpent Blade was used because the standard of the Haradrim in the books is a Red Serpent on a Black Field. It was repainted in what I consider better desert colors. |
"Haradrim with Mace and Sword" |
This figure has had its torso repositioned so it is standing over its right foot. The foot has also been repositioned so that it is facing towards the front, giving the figure a more appropriate fighting stance. Both arms have been repositioned and the weapons have been swapped for a mace and sword. It was repainted in what I consider better desert colors. |
"Haradrim with Scythe" |
This figure has had its torso repositioned so that it is more twisted towards the left and its weapon has been swapped with a deadly-looking scythe. The left arm has been repositioned so that it looks like it could grab the scythe in a two-handed fashion. It was repainted in what I consider better desert colors. |
"Haradrim with Spear" |
The Haradrim Warrior (Orange) isn’t nearly as effective as the Purple, but it does have Fast Strike at a cost of 2, so is still a good figure to use. This was a very simple conversion with the repositioning of the right arm, and a weapon swap for a spear. I had considered giving the figure a banner of a Red Serpent on Black Field, but decided that it looked good without one. It was repainted in what I consider better desert colors. |

Did I see a Troll? |

Oh boy, yes! |
This Troll is home made and is not related to the future
official Troll from Sabertooth. This Cave Troll is part of
series of large lead models. It has been adapted to the game with the design
of an hex base and a picture with stats "a la Sabertooth". |

I have had this
idea of how to create a 3D map for a while now, but never had the time to
progress past the thought. But recently over the Holidays I had some time
to get to work on this awesome map. Here is a basic overview of how I did
it. After some planning on the shape and what I wanted the map to look like, I got to work. I bought two 2'x4' Styrofoam sheets that were each 2" thick. I used toothpicks to temporarily hold the two sheets together to make my map 4" thick. I drew basic lines kind of like a topographical map showing where the hills, flat areas, and the river would be. I then started carving. Using a variety of tools I carved and cut the top sheet of the map to my desired shape. Since I only carved the top sheet, the whole map's elevation only changes by 2", which seems like plenty for this size map. Then I took the top Styrofoam sheet and glued it to the bottom sheet. This makes the map very strong and sturdy. Now I have my map with all the shapes I want. Next I took plaster cloth and covered the whole top of the map with it. I let that dry and sanded it kind of smooth. Then I painted the map with the basic colors of the ground I wanted (greens, browns, and blues for the river). After the paint dried, I took a can of spray on hobby glue and lightly sprayed a thin coat over parts of the map. Then I sprinkled on variegated grass color foliage from the local hobby store. This gave the map a nice grass like texture. I also put some fine sand along the riverbank. Now this is the most time consuming part. To make the hexes, I carved a rubber stamp that was about 4 hexes wide by 5 hexes long. You can buy the rubber to do this usually from a craft store. I rolled green paint onto the stamp and carefully stamped the map green where there is normally white; and used blue paint on a single hex stamp for the river. Then I lightly sprayed a little more glue and sprinkled a little more grass and sand texture over the map again. This makes the hexes not overly noticeable, but easily seen when playing. Then came making the trees and bridge. The trees are made from twigs that looked like tree trunks. I simply hot glued some light green moss from the local craft store to the twigs. The bridge is made from branches that I cut and glued together. I sanded the top of the bridge to make it flat so it would look like planks. I also lightly distressed the whole bridge so it didn't look brand new. To make the hexes on the bridge, I used a wood-burning tool to burn the hexes in. I also lightly went over the top of the bridge with a flame to give it a more variation in color and give it a more realistic look. The fence I bought and modified to the right size. To get the trees to stay in place, I poked a small hole in the map where I wanted there to be trees. Then I poked the trees down into the map; this makes the trees look like they are actually growing out of the map and not stuck on. I can still take the trees out during travel, and you don't even really notice the small hole in the map if you didn't want trees; and you can easily patch it if you ever wanted, and no one could ever tell. I also have the fence held in place by a very small wire hidden by some foliage. And there you have it, an awesome 3D map. I have a few ideas that I still could do to the map, but I'll see how it goes. I am also currently working on a 3D wall and gate, and hope to start work on a larger 3D map that is either 6'x6' or 4'x8'. The progress on the
3D Wall and gate can be seen at: |
